MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) has stepped up its fight against illegal advertising, removing 1,346 unauthorised ads – mostly from moneylenders – until July this year.
Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said that the council issued 35 warning notices under Section 17 of the Local Authorities (Advertisements) By-laws, 2012, to businesses including reflexology centres, money lending centres, and furniture shops for unauthorised window coverings.
“We have also removed expired, damaged, or permit-less ads across the city,” he told the council meeting today (July 29).
The council has received numerous complaints about illegal moneylender ads, which not only mar the city’s image but also pose safety risks.
“We have been actively enforcing regulations throughout July,” Yii added.
The council urged residents and advertising companies to comply with guidelines for displaying ads and business signs.
All advertising materials must be approved by the City Council Enforcement Section at the UTC building, level 2B.
Offenders risk fines of up to RM5,000 and confiscation of unauthorised materials under the Local Authorities (Advertisements) By-laws 2012, Sections 23 and 28.
