KUCHING: Awareness and protection of consumer rights depend not only on government and company actions but also on active individual engagement.
National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak chairman Wynson Ong Teck Ping, in his message in conjunction with World Consumer Rights Day, said everyone plays a vital role in protecting themselves and supporting initiatives to improve quality of life and justice in society.
“The MTPN has various communication channels including phone lines, email, online forms, or mobile applications.
“Fill out complaint forms or provide details of your complaint through the chosen channels.
“Be sure to provide clear and complete details about your complaint, including your contact information and relevant evidence. Submit your complaint through the chosen channel. Be sure to keep a copy or confirmation of the complaint for future reference.”
He added that consumers have eight rights in their daily lives, among them; the right to basic needs, the right to access safe goods and services, the right to access accurate information, the right to make informed choices, the right to voice opinions, the right to compensation, the right to live in a clean and healthy environment, and the right to consumer education.
“Today, amid technological advancements and globalisation, consumer rights are an aspect that cannot be overlooked in daily life. These rights are a crucial foundation that protects us from abuse and injustice in the market. Therefore, it is our responsibility to understand, respect, and advocate for these rights.
“MTPN Sarawak strives to be the voice of Malaysians in ensuring that consumer rights are upheld and defended.
“We aim to enhance awareness and protection of consumer rights through various initiatives, including awareness campaigns, consumer lectures, anti-scam lectures, cooperation with relevant government and private sector stakeholders, and other programmes.”
He urged the people to commit together to be wise, responsible, and proactive consumers in advocating for the consumer’s rights.
“Let us continue to strive to build a fairer, safer, and more prosperous society for all.
“Happy World Consumer Rights Day to all consumers in Sarawak! Together, we can make Sarawak a prime example in advocating for and safeguarding consumer rights.”
