SIBU: Litterbugs here had better beware. The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is going all out to ensure the town is free of litter.
Chairman Clarence Ting (pic) said habitual litterbugs, who throw rubbish on the street and out of moving vehicles, were a nuisance.
Throwing away ATM receipts indiscriminately was also a common nasty habit, he lamented.
“We need to change our mindset in order to keep Sibu clean and beautiful. Compound fee of RM500 was served on litterbugs from July 1, 2017,” he said.
From January to August this year, a total of 454 compound notices were served on litterbugs.
Ting also regretted that illegal dumping of waste was still rampant.
“It is a sad to see people simply dumping rubbish along five-footways, traffic islands and open spaces, and piling building debris on road verges,” he said.
Despite numerous cleaning campaigns and public awareness programmes organised by SMC, he said this particular issue still occurred and had spoilt the image of the town.
On Visit Malaysia Year 2020, he said SMC had carried out some improvement works on public toilets at Khoo Peng Loong Market, Lau King Howe Memorial Museum, Sibu Gateway, and single-storey shophouses in Jalan Belatok. The next target area would be the toilets at the Central Market, he said.
