SIBU: The Ministry of Transport has authorised local authorities in the state to set up a Traffic Warden Unit within their jurisdiction.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said he aims to set up the unit in all urban local authorities in the state under his Public Health, Housing and Local Government Ministry.

“The unit plays a crucial role in aiding the police to control traffic congestion in urban areas.”

He said this while attending the 70th Anniversary Dinner of the Sibu Rural District Council (MDLBS) at a hotel here last Saturday.

“We have been given the power to assist the police. What is needed now is for each local authority to provide their manpower to cover these additional services to the community,” he explained.

Dr Sim said the Traffic Warden Unit should be established in every local authority in urban areas in view of heavy traffic congestion issues apart from helping the police deal with the problem.

In other matters, he urged local authorities to play their role in public health with all council members working together with their chairmen and local authority management.

He said a review of councillor appointments would be done within the next six months as their terms were due to end in the middle of this year.
