KUCHING: A Magistrate Court’s here yesterday dismissed an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to remand three senior officials of a state government agency and a businessman in connection with a graft probe.
Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar also ordered all four suspects to be released after finding no reasonable grounds to further detain them.
MACC had applied to get the suspects remanded for seven days to enable it to complete its investigation into the case under Section 16(a) of the MACC Act 2009 within 24 hours.
The application was made under Section 117of the MACC Act 2009.
Roger Chin, the lawyer of one of the officers, said MACC failed to provide a valid reason to detain his client.
“If the arrest was only to help in MACC’s investigation, why isn’t Datuk Seri Najib (Razak) remanded in connection with the corruption case that he is facing?
“So, there is no reason for them to hold my client,” he said, referring to the former prime minister who is now facing graft charges related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal.
