Crafts galore at Kuching Waterfront

KUCHING: Currently on display and sale at the Borneo Textile Craft Festival (FKTB) 2023 at the Kuching Waterfront are Pua Kumbu (woven textile), Duku (sheathed knife), Sarawak Malay Gendang, colourful woven bags, batik ready-made clothes and unique beaded jewellery.

The event, held in conjunction with this year’s Sarawak Regatta – Kuching Waterfront Festival, is expected to generate sales of RM2.2 million.

Taking place from Oct 27 to Nov 5 (10 am to 10 pm), it is organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) through the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Malaysian Handicraft).

The festival involves about 121 entrepreneurs and is expected to draw more than 80,000 visitors.

It features various interesting activities such as craft sales, craft demonstrations, interactive craft, new craft product exhibition, National Craft Institute Satellite Campus exhibition, MYCRAFTSHOPPE exhibition, community craft product sales, visitor encouragement activities, and many more.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at the soft opening of the festival yesterday (Oct 28).

The FKTB is one of the main programmes of the Sarawak Regatta – Kuching Waterfront Festival 2023.

Its objectives are to promote and commercialise local craft products to domestic and international tourists.

The festival also hopes to provide a platform for the entrepreneurs and craft community to increase their incomes.

Themed ‘Ini Kraf Malaysia’, it features the diversity of Malaysian craft products in Sarawak, Sabah, and Peninsular Malaysia.

The concept of organising the festival is based on the aspirations of Malaysia Madani which is synonymous with the culture and ethnic groups in Sarawak and Sabah,
