KUCHING: The creative arts should be regarded as a viable profession, not just a hobby or a source of side income, says Dr Elena Gregoria Chai Chin Fern.

The Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Principal Assistant Secretary said society should place greater value on creative professions, including those in the performing arts, visual arts and other creative fields.

“We want parents to understand that allowing their children to participate in artistic performances, whether it’s lion dance, playing the guitar, or other artistic endeavours, can lead to a sustainable future.

“We don’t want people to think that those who dance, play music, or engage in creative activities are only doing it for side income or as a hobby.

“It’s another way to ensure our arts, culture, and heritage remain sustainable,” she said.

She said this in her speech during the grand finale of Kuching International Busking Festival (KIBF) held at Plaza Merdeka here last night (Aug 31).

Dr Chai further highlighted the importance of recognising artists as professionals who deserve fair compensation.

She called on the event organisers to ensure that artists are paid for their work, as that is key to expanding the creative industry.

“We want to make creative arts a respected profession. Not just by the government, but by society as a whole.

“Hopefully, one day, when people fill out official forms, they can confidently list their occupation as a dancer, artist, or photographer,” she added.

She also encouraged the organisers of the Kuching International Busking Festival to consider registering the event’s trademark, as it continues to grow in popularity. This year’s festival, in its second edition, saw over 400 participants.

The festival, which ran from Aug 29 to 30 from 6pm to 10pm, featured buskers performing at 48 iconic locations, including Carpenter Street, Jalan Ewe Hai, Main Bazaar, China Street, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, India Street, Jalan Courthouse, Gambir Street, and Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall.
