KUCHING: The crime rate in Kuching has shown a decrease in 56 cases in 2017 as compared to 2016. According to district police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, there were 1,554 cases in 2017, compared to 1,610 cases in 2016.

“This shows that Kuching is still a safe place and that the police are doing their job well to keep the crime rate at bay.

“Through various operations and cooperation with local authorities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), we will work harder to fight crime in Kuching,” he said. In relation to drugs in the area, he disclosed that 1,358 arrests had been made on individuals involved in drug-related cases, with cocaine (‘syabu’) being the top of the list.

As for commercial crime, he said there were 43 cases of various online scams such as love scams and African scams. Abang Ahmad said this while delivering his speech at the first monthly police assembly for 2018 at IPD Kuching, Jalan Simpang Tiga here yesterday.
