KUCHING: The Cross-Country Walk programme serves as a call for everyone to persist in exercising and developing a healthy lifestyle.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng made this remark when officiating at the Cross-Country Walk 6.0 SJK Chung Hua No.3 here on Friday.
According to him, with improved living standards, many children have developed bad habits like excessive use of electronics and lack of exercise, which leads to poor mental health, laziness, myopia, and other health issues.
“Through activities like hiking, we hope to get students out of the classroom, get close to nature, and improve their physical fitness. Schoolwork is important, but we cannot ignore healthy living habits. With a healthy body and mental state, our learning will be more effective with half the effort,” he said when speaking during the event.
Wee believes that with the combined efforts of the school, parents, and school board, a healthy, happy, and fulfilling environment for children can be created.
“Therefore, I hope that students will actively participate in various sports activities. Exercise can not only enhance our physical fitness, but also cultivate our self-discipline,” he expressed.
Furthermore, Wee urged schools to focus on students’ physical and mental health alongside classroom learning, guiding them to develop good habits and balance academics with well-being.
