KUCHING: With just over a week left to polling for the 15th general election (GE15), the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) machinery is all out to ensure that every voter knows the party’s candidate in a particular constituency.
Beting Maro assemblyman Razaili Gapor says this is crucial because GPS, which was formed after the defeat of Barisan Nasional (BN) in 2018, is contesting as a local coalition for the first time in a general election. Hence, voters might not be very familiar with the candidate or party symbol.
“What is troubling is, there are still people asking – who is the candidate?
“I hope this matter can be dealt with quickly and with the remaining campaign time available, the GPS machinery should go all out to meet voters and most importantly they know the candidate they are voting for.
“This is especially crucial for the young people who are voting for the first time and the elderly group,” he said.
The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Supreme Council member said this after a meeting with party workers at Dewan Rahmaniah, in Samarahan today. Also present was Batang Lupar GPS candidate Mohamad Shafizan Kepli.
“For us in Batang Lupar, the candidate’s name and the GPS logo is the first or top of the candidates’ list in the voting paper.
“Explain to voters to tick in that box (candidate number one), the two boxes below can be ignored straight away. Open the ballot paper, tick the top box, then go back. Don’t worry,” he said.
Razaili called on the 43,072 voters in Batang Lupar to vote for GPS.
“I focus on those who will vote for the first time, in the data of the Election Commission (SPR), we have 2,746 voters aged 18 to 20 years.
“While 21 to 39 years old, there are 18,185 voters. It means young people will be decisive,” he said.
The Election Commission has set November 19 as polling day for the 15th general election while early polling is on Nov 15.
