KUCHING: Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) is focusing on halal tourism to cater to the growing market in Singapore and Brunei.

According to its chief executive officer (CEO) Sharzede Datuk Salleh Askor, these two countries consistently rank among Sarawak’s top five visitor source markets.

“This demonstrates the deep and growing interest in what Sarawak has to offer,” she said in her opening remarks during the Brunei, Singapore and Sarawak Travel Connect Business Networking Session, held at Sheraton Hotel yesterday (Sept 13).

Halal certification, which ensures hygiene, ethical practices, and consumer trust, is not only about religious observance.

It also makes Sarawak an accessible and inclusive destination for all travelers.

As Malaysia’s UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Kuching offers a diverse culinary experience shaped by the traditions of 34 ethnic groups. This recognition reinforces Sarawak’s inclusivity and ensures that all visitors, regardless of their dietary preferences, can enjoy the city’s gastronomic offerings.

In addition to its culinary heritage, Sarawak’s natural landscape continues to captivate travelers. The recent designation of Niah National Park as Sarawak’s second UNESCO World Heritage Site, joining Mulu National Park, highlights the state’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

“Let us engage in meaningful conversation, exchange innovative ideas, and build partnerships that will help us cater to the evolving needs of travelers for all walks of life,” she added.
