BAU: The agriculture sector will be the main focus to generate income for constituents in Opar, says its assemblyman Billy Sujang.
According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) on Friday (March 11), Billy said assistance and guidance from the Agriculture Department were needed for this purpose as well as grabbing the opportunities provided by the government through the Agricultural Facilitation Fund (AFF).
“Focusing on oil palm alone is not enough because apart from requiring a large land area, manpower also needs to be considered when cultivating the crop long term.
“What can be done to earn income in a short time is to cultivate other crops such as corn, paddy or vegetable.”
He said this during a visit to assess the infrastructure as well as drainage system for the cultivation of paddy at Kampung Jugan here on Thursday (March 10).
Billy also urged residents to plant pandan coconut as it is in high demand apart from black pepper.
He was accompanied by Kuching assistant agriculture officer Victor Douglas Abang, Bau assistant agriculture officer Nicholas Ajis and Kampung Jugan headman Ponisa Nyuyam.
