KUCHING: Sarawak aims to have a society that is both educated and cultured.

According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, an educated and cultured society is the balance that the state needs.

Similar to environment and development, he explained, there needs to be a balance.

“This is why in Sarawak, its education policy is not only aimed at economic development but also the development of culture.

“We do not want our society to be based only on technology but rather on human touch. That is why here, we are grateful that the people of Sarawak still uphold its culture, and respect towards one another despite the diversity that we have,” he said.

He said this when he officiated at the 2024 Sarawak Education Award ceremony at Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Petra Jaya here today.

He assured that the state government would work alongside with the educators to cultivate a cultured and educated society.

“I recently read a document on the United States mentioning that the society there has lost their direction which led to the violence such as shooting and killing happening there.

“We do not want that. We do not want to be developed but culturally lost in the society. Therefore, I thank the educators (for educating knowledge and cultivating culture).

“Whatever that the state government can help with (for the educators), we will lend our hands,” he said.
