MIRI: Construction management students from Curtin University Malaysia recently experienced a unique opportunity to delve into the complexities of residential construction during a site visit to Greenville Phase 8 in Senadin here.
Organised by Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Built Environment, the visit allowed students to observe real-world construction practices and enhance their understanding of the field.
Greenville Phase 8, developed by Shin Yang Construction Sdn Bhd, is a gated community comprising 50 double-storey semi-detached homes.
The visit offered students a behind-the-scenes look at various stages of the project, from the early groundwork to the final touches. Under the guidance of project manager Jong Foh Kiong, students observed key construction activities, including masonry brickworks, roof installation, and concrete screeding.
“In addition to practical observations, the students gained exposure to innovative techniques, such as the use of PVC corner beads, which ensure precise 90-degree corners and help protect walls. The demonstration of construction machinery, including mobile cranes and ready-mix concrete trucks, further enriched the students’ learning experience,” it said in a press release issued on Thursday (Oct 24).
Sr. Dr. Low Wai Wah, head of the Department of Built Environment, highlighted the significance of such visits, stating that this hands-on experience helps students bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application.
Curtin Malaysia continues to strive with experiential learning as part of its construction management programme, preparing students for successful careers in the construction industry.
