MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia’s Faculty of Business recently organised two impactful community engagement initiatives to empower individuals facing barriers to education.
The first initiative involved providing an English class at Kenosis, a drug rehabilitation centre at Jalan Bunga Tanjung Miri here yesterday.
The class was aimed to equip the rehabilitees with essential language skills that could enhance their employability and integration into society, thereby increasing their chances of successful reintegration into the community.
Meanwhile, the second initiative involved a learning programme at Faith Life Training College (FLTC), Jalan Tanjong Petra, a specialised institution tailored for school dropouts and disadvantaged minorities.
The programme focused on personal development, life skills, and entrepreneurship through interactive activities, mentorship, and knowledge-sharing sessions for students.
Both initiatives were coordinated and led by the faculty’s administrative team, with the involvement of 19 staff members and two postgraduate research students, who dedicated over eight hours of service to these initiatives.
Faculty lecturer Ho Jie Min emphasised that community engagement is more than just a core value of the faculty, it is a fundamental responsibility towards uplifting society.
“By actively participating in these initiatives, our students and staff gain valuable experiences while creating an impact in the lives of individuals who need it the most.
“We firmly believe that these activities are essential in building a more inclusive and prosperous community,” he said in a statement yesterday.
