KUCHING: The state Royal Malaysian Customs Department busted a smuggling attempt and confiscated contraband beer of various brands, estimated to be worth RM173,135 including tax, in a raid here on Wednesday.
Its director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha said the raid took place at a residential area in Tabuan Desa where the illicit goods were stashed in a cargo
container.
A team of Customs officers and personnel have been tracking and monitoring the activity at the said residential area prior to the raid.
“In the raid, we found various brands of beer stored in the container for distribution to the city market.
“Following that, we seized 11,729.52 liters or 1,481 cartons of various brands of beer worth RM38,340, with unpaid duties and taxes,” she said in a statement yesterday.
All seized items were taken to the department’s enforcement store for safe keeping and further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for storage of prohibited goods. Offenders could be penalised for making incorrect declarations and
document fabrications.
