SIBU: The Sarawak Customs Department will intensify operations against contraband items such as cigarettes and beer.
Its director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha reminded everyone, especially businesses, to abide by the law or risk punitive action.
“To all buyers of such cigarettes and beer, please ensure you buy them from official sources. The cooperation from all parties is needed to ensure that there is no contraband in the market,” she said yesterday.
Sharifah welcomed the public to provide authorities with information of any business selling contraband items.
“We want to make sure that businesses sell only legitimate cigarettes and beer, which can be identified by the tax stamp.”
She stressed that under Section 119A of the Customs Act, those caught selling contraband would be fined up to RM100,000 or sentenced to a minimum of six months in jail.
