KUCHING: The culvert at the junction of Lorong Tengah C, Siburan Village has been identified as the root cause of flash floods and waterlogging.

Sanjan Daik, the special assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, inspected the situation yesterday.

“We found that not only the culvert was too small to allow flood water to drain quickly but it was also damaged.

“The villagers have brought up this problem several times with the authority concerned, an inspection was made but till today, no action had been taken,” he explained.

“The single, small, round-sized culvert cannot accommodate the enormous amount of water flowing down from the hills and the village.

“The other end of the culvert clearly showed soil erosion, with the round metal culvert jutting out dangerously.

“There are many other small, round-sized culverts not far from Lorong Tengah C at Kampung Masaan and Kampung Sungai Du-uh that should also be replaced to prevent flash floods,” he elaborated.

“With the new boundary made by the state government, Siburan is now under the jurisdiction of the Serian District Council (SDC). As such, we urged the SDC to take proactive steps to alleviate the problem.”

Sanjan suggested that the present culvert be replaced with a large U-shaped culvert to enable flood water to flow quickly.
