KUCHING : Thirty Democratic Action Party (DAP) members and supporters helped a poor widow, Lina anak Nanus of Kampung Koran Plaman, Serian recently to repair her dilapidated house. They were joined by a group of ten volunteers.
The dream of building a new house for his family never materialised when Lina’s late husband, Kimpui ak Buki, a farmer, died early this year after a long fight with cancer. He was the family’s bread winner.
During his life’s final years, Kimpui was given a small amount of welfare assistance by the government. The assistance ended with his death.
Lina now lives with her daughter who works as a coffee shop assistant in Serian town and two other children who are still schooling. Her eldest daughter has married and is living separately with her own
family in the same village.
DAP Serian Chief, Edward Luwat led the “gotong royong” (mutual assist) programme to help Lina.
Work began at 8.00am and ended at 6.00 pm. Although spending a day there, the DAP members and volunteers still could not complete their tasks.
“The team will organise another day of “gotong royong”, tentatively fixed on September 9,
to complete the tasks and hopefully to give Lina and her children a more decent home,” said Edward.
He called on Good Samaritans for help as the group needed 300 pieces of hollow cement bricks to replace the wooden wall of the kitchen and replace the leaking roof of the kitchen, toilet and wash areas.
They also need 20 pieces of 14-foot long roofing sheets costing about RM70 each.
