KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak will not contest in the Jepak state by-election.
Its chairman Chong Chieng Jen said this is in respect of Parti Keadilan (PKR) Sarawak’s decision not to contest in the said seat.
“DAP Sarawak will respect the decision of PKR Sarawak not to contest in the Jepak by-election as this is the seat assigned to PKR under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak coalition and that PKR Sarawak has indicated that it will not contest in the by-election.
“As such, DAP Sarawak will not field a candidate to contest the by-election,” he said in a statement after the party’s State Committee meeting today.
Chong added notwithstanding the decision, DAP Sarawak will continue to play its part as a constructive opposition and act as checks and balances in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly.
“This is to ensure policies by the government are properly implemented and more importantly bring direct benefits to the people of Sarawak as a whole,” he said.
The Election Commission (EC) has set Nov 4 as the polling day and Oct 21 as the nomination day for the Jepak state-by election.
The Jepak seat became vacant on Sept 15 following the death of its assemblyman, Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who passed away at the age of 72.
