MIRI: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak will defend former Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon should the Sarawak government take legal action to demand for salaries and allowances already paid to him as well as revocation of his Malaysian citizenship.
DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen said during this challenging time for DAP Miri, they were giving their full support to Dr Ting.
“….I think what the State government want to do is hit below the belt, …over the past three years, we see how Dr Ting has performed his duties as an ADUN for Pujut and he is entitled to his salary,” he said during a press conference at DAP Miri headquarters here.
“I believe that Pujut constituents acknowledged that Dr Ting was a very hard working representative for them,” he added.
Chong criticised the State government’s intention to revoke Dr Ting’s Malaysian citizenship describing such action was against human rights.
“No government can revoke a citizenship, he (Dr Ting) could become stateless, it is against human rights, even during the rule of Barisan Nasional (BN) they would not revoke any citizenship, the government should respect human rights, ” he pointed out.
Chong announced that Dr Ting has been appointed his political secretary with immediate effect.
He explained that despite being stripped off from his position as Pujut assemblyman, Dr Ting would continue to serve Pujut constituents as usual until the dissolution of the current DUN term.
On February 11, the Federal Court disqualified Dr Ting as Pujut assemblyman over his dual citizenship issues.
