SIBU: Sarawak DAP has described Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) as a ‘spoiler’ for contesting in the 15th general election (GE15).
Its chairman Chong Chieng Jen said PSB had no national platform and was devoid of a firm stance or clear direction, likening the party to a ‘lalang’ .
He urged the local-based opposition party to withdraw its candidates from the election, arguing that the number of seats that it won in the last state election clearly showed that its efforts to contest in the GE15 “would go down the drain”.
He was referring to the 12th Sarawak state polls in December last year where PSB only won four out of the 72 seats it contested.
Chong, who is defending his Stampin seat, said PSB would not become a kingmaker by “just winning one or two parliamentary seats”.
“Thus, it is clear that they will not win in GE15 too but merely be a ‘spoiler’ to spilt votes. That’s the real role that the party is playing in the general election,” he told a press conference at the DAP headquarters here, yesterday (Nov 7).
“I sincerely appeal to this Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh (PSB president) and Pricilla Lau (Parti Bumi Kenyalang candidate who is contesting in Lanang under the PSB symbol) to announce their withdrawal from this election.
“Whatever personal inclination or personal likes or dislikes, nothing is greater than the interest of the nation and the 30 million Malaysians and our children’s future. We do not want to return to the UMNO era but move on with our reforms,” Chong said.
He said the country was suffering with the ringgit being devalued, cost of living going up, prices of food escalating, the unprecedented inflation and Bank Negara increasing the BLR.
PSB is contesting in Sibu, Miri, Lawas, Sri Aman, Puncak Borneo, Lubok Antu and Serian. The party has formed an alliance with PBK and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS).
PBK is fielding candidates in Bandar Kuching, Stampin and Lanang under the PSB symbol which in Mas Gading it is contesting under its own logo.
