KUCHING: A total of RM25,000 in cash prizes are up for grabs at the Kuching City Open 2017 (KC017) Darts Championship, to be held at Stadium Perpaduan, Petra Jaya here from Dec 8-10. KCO17 Darts Championship, which is now in its second year, is an international competition that has the recognition of the World Dart Federation (WDF) as well as advisory assistance from the Malaysian Dart Association (MDA).

At a media conference held at the Stadium Perpaduan, Petra Jaya here yesterday, Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Haji Abang Abdul Wahab Bin Abang Julai said the championship had received overwhelming response, with 54 teams going to fight it out.

The teams are from Singapore (1), Brunei (3), Selangor (2), Labuan (3), Kota Kinabalu (2), Sri Aman (4), Miri (4), Kuching (24), Bintulu (3), Perlis/Kedah (1), Kota Padawan (3) and Sibu (4). Abdul Wahab informed that in conjunction with the championship other activities like Flea Market, Food Truck and Communit y Entrepreneurship will also be held.

The championship is divided into four categories – Team, Second Chance, Men’s Open and Women’s Open. In the Team category, the prizes are as follows: 1st – RM8,000 plus trophy and medals; 2nd – RM4,000 plus trophy and medals; joint 3rd and 4th – RM1,500 plus trophy and medals; 5th to 8th – RM500 plus trophy and medals; 9th to 16th – medals.

In the Second Chance category, the prizes are as follows: 1st – RM700 plus trophy and medal; 2nd – RM400 plus trophy and medal; joint 3rd and 4th – RM200 plus trophy and medal; 5th to 8th – RM100 plus medal. In the Men’s Open category, the prizes are as follows: 1st – RM1,500 plus trophy and medal; 2nd – RM700 plus trophy and medal; joint 3rd and 4th – RM300 plus medal; 5th -8th – RM200 plus medal; 9th to 16th – medal.

In the Women’s Open category, the prizes will be: 1st – RM800 plus trophy and medal; 2nd – RM600 plus trophy and medal; joint 3rd and 4th – RM250 plus trophy and medal; 5th to 8th – RM100 plus medal; 9th to 16th – medal. The Championship received sponsorship from various government agencies, the private sector and non-government bodies.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports sponsored cash of RM20,000 for the event while SEDC subsidiaries also chipped in including Sara Resorts Sdn Bhd, Damai Beach Resort, Riverside Majestic Puteri Wing and Grand Margherita Hotel. Other sponsors are Kuching City Park System, Sarawak Dart Association and Kuching Dart Association.
