KUCHING: The start of the statewide Ops Ubah Suai Ekzos saw a total of 149 summonses issued for various traffic offences on Monday.
From the figure, 34 were issued to motorcycle owners for exhaust system modifications.
Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu revealed that the operation was carried out in seven districts — Kuching, Padawan, Bau, Serian, Marudi, Lawas and Limbang.
“Kuching recorded the highest number of exhaust modification offences with 15 summonses issued followed by Padawan (eight).
“Four were issued in Limbang, three in Serian, two in Bau and one each in Marudi and Lawas,” he said.
He added that a total of 115 summonses involving various traffic offences were issued after 348 vehicles were inspected.
The operations were conducted from 8am to 5pm and 40 traffic police officers were involved.
The routes involved were Jalan Barrack in Kuching, Jalan Bau-Batu Kawa, Jalan Batu Kawa, Kota Sentosa traffic light intersection, Jalan Datuk Stephen Yong, Jalan Kuching-Serian, Jalan Ridan in Marudi, KM2, Jalan Merapok in Lawas and Jalan Wong Tsap Enn in Limbang.
Last week, Alexson announced that an operation against vehicle owners who modified their exhaust systems would be held until March 14.
If found guilty, a fine of up to RM2,000 or a jail term of up to six months will be meted out.
