SIBU: The Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu Cup 2024 Badminton Tournament served as a vibrant platform for Dayak athletes not only in Sibu but across Sarawak to exhibit their skills.

SDNU Sibu chairman Chambai Lindong said the tournament welcomed Dayak players from throughout Sarawak, with 12 teams competing from Kuching to Miri this year.

“This two-day tournament not only uncovered hidden talents but also strengthened their social connections, especially as Gawai approaches. It can be considered one of our Gawai Dayak programmes in Sibu,” he said during the prize-giving ceremony at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bukit Assek yesterday (Apr 21).

Chambai envisioned future tournaments rotating across different districts or divisions in the state.

“By alternating venues, for example, this year in Sibu, and maybe next year in Sarikei, Sri Aman, or Kuching, we can enhance frequency, with the ultimate goal of hosting the event  annually,” he added.

The Green Hotel team from Bintulu claimed the championship title, securing a cash prize of RM1,500, along with a trophy and medals. CTM Manchucy Ent team from Kuching were the first runner-up, earning RM900 alongside medals.
