KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that an area within the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) jurisdiction of has been recognised as the Sarawak Delta Geopark.
He said this recognition is on par with the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark and Perak Geoparks.
“This DBKU area falls under the Sarawak Delta Geopark. As a result, this area will become an attraction for tourists because it has its own inherent value.
“Indeed, we want to strive in the long term to be recognised by UNESCO, and therefore we are committed to planning accordingly to realise this vision,” he said.
He made these remarks during the Friendly Neighbourhood (KJM) dinner held at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building here last night (Feb 7).
Abang Johari urged the communities in Sarawak, particularly those residing in the DBKU area, to uphold environmental cleanliness amid rapid development.
“People in Kuching must remain vigilant, prioritise cleanliness, and uphold ethical values when within the geopark area. Every aspect of this area holds value, including its geological formations, even the rocks.
Drawing parallels with well-preserved natural sites like Bako National Park, Sematan, and Sungai Salat, he stressed the importance of continuous efforts in environmental preservation to ensure sustainability and conservation.
“We are even taking care of the rivers that are infested with crocodiles. We have to continue this effort to preserve our environment to prevent any environmental issues,” he added.
