KUCHING: Both Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will be taking extra precautions as rabies have been detected in the city.

Since Friday, DBKU has caught a total of 142 stray dogs.

“We are doing whatever we can in our capacity to ensure that the problem does not affect the people here in the city.

“In fact, Siol Kandis was cleared of stray dogs a few days ago but more dogs have appeared in the area.

“Initially, we had established one team to tackle this matter but due to the recent situation, we have established another team,” Mayor of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai told a press conference at Stadium Perpaduan here yesterday.

“Currently, only DBKU has acquired the Telinject Licence, a long range equipment to temporarily incapacitate animals so that they can be easily caught.

“All the animals are brought to the Veterinary Department.,” said Wahap.

He said cats, which could also be carriers of rabies, were not caught by DBKU.

“We do not have any place for them as the shelter at the Sarawak Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (SSPCA) is full.

“Therefore, we advise those who are keeping dogs or cats to keep them inside  secure areas,” said Wahap.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Dato James Chan Khay Syn, told the press that both councils would work together to ensure the safety of the public, especially during the festival periods (August – December).
