KUCHING: The heart is not just an essential organ, but a symbol of love and connection in our lives, says Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman.

Hilmy said this in his officiating speech for the Sayangi Jantung Anda Health Carnival held at the Dewan Datuk Merpati Jepang in Satok today (Sept 21).

Stressing on the importance of maintaining heart health, he highlighted the event’s significance, coming just days before World Heart Day, which is observed annually on September 29.

“We are here today not only to celebrate Heart Day but to engage our community in understanding the importance of heart health and also prevention and education are critical in combating heart-related diseases.

“Prevention is always better than cure,” he added.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Panel Penasihat Klinik Kesihatan Jalan Masjid, Komuniti Sihat Pembina Negara (KOSPEN), Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Satok Women Branch, and Kejiranan Mesra (KJM), attracted city residents and health advocates alike.

The carnival featured free health screenings, wellness counselling, and vaccination services, all aimed at promoting healthy living.

Physical activities were also encouraged, with the mayor advocating for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week, as a way to prevent heart complications.

The carnival is also a part of a broader effort to support the government’s aspirations for a Malaysia Madani, particularly in areas of health, education, and rural community development.
