KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) yesterday signed Memoranda of Understanding with three parties at the DBKU Library at the Islamic Complex here.
The MoUs were between DBKU and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas); DBKU and Pestech International Bhd (PIB) and Layar Bumimas Sdn Bhd (LBSB); and lastly, DBKU and Betsol Sdn Bhd and LBSB.
For the first MoU, DBKU director Dr Morshidi Ahmad signed on behalf of DBKU while Design Technology Department lecturer Dr Faridah Sahari signed for Unimas.
For the second MoU, PIB’s deputy general manager Max Tan signed on behalf of the company while LBSB’s director Haji Amir Zainudin signed on behalf of the company.
For the third MoU, chief marketing officer Thomas Pui signed on behalf of Bestol.
The first MoU signed with Unimas was for the university to train DBKU Friendly Neighbourhood (KJM) entrepreneurs on marketing, advertising, branding, packaging, etc, so that they could run home businesses.
The second MoU between DBKU, PIB and LBSB was to help digitalise DBKU standard procedures through PIB’s involvement in the Advance Metering infrastructure that focused on Smart Grid in Smart Metering.
The third MoU signing with Betsol Sdn Bhd was to look for alternative ways to recycle organic wastes into fertilisers as Bestol is the only bio-technology company in Malaysia. It focuses on natural decomposition technology, Black Soldier Fly for the organic waste industry to a sustainable protein conversion.
It is hoped that the public will able to benefit from the smart and sustainable initiatives that the MoUs will facilitate.
DBKU mayor Datuk Abdul Wahap Abang Julai told a press conference yesterday that the commission’s Clean, Beautiful and Safe (CBS) Enhancement Plan, a five-year plan which it starts this year until 2023, included two initiatives: Smart and Sustainable.
He said DBKU’s smart building depot was expected to be ready for use on January 1, 2020.
“The building uses natural lighting and will not use a lot of electricity. There will not be any switches in the room or even toilets,” he added.
