KUCHING: Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan praised the efforts of several city dwellers who voluntarily cleaned the Padang Merdeka compound after a recent event.
The event was the Konsert Rakyat, held in conjunction with Sarawak’s 60th anniversary of independence on July 22.
In his speech at the 35th Kuching City Day held at Kuching Waterfront, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Tuesday (Aug 1), Junaidi highlighted the significance of this event in fostering a change in attitude and practices among city residents towards maintaining the cleanliness of their surroundings.
“July being the Kuching City Cleanliness Month, the third year of its organisation, makes it particularly fitting for such community-driven actions to occur. I believe that the efforts of these young individuals in cleaning the Padang Merdeka area will inspire many more similar actions in the future.
“I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to these unsung heroes who took it upon themselves to keep the city’s public spaces clean.”
Previously, a Facebook user shared the good deeds displayed by Sarawakians who cleaned up Padang Merdeka after the event, noting that it was done voluntarily, and the field was restored to cleanliness within 10 minutes. The act garnered appreciation and praise from the community.
Meanwhile, the 35th Kuching City Day celebration was also attended by Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Kuching South City Council mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and other distinguished guests.
