KUCHING: Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has never issued any instruction to expel hawkers selling food and beverages at Kuching Waterfront starting this month.
DBKU Mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan explained that the allegation was not true because planning to beautify Kuching Waterfront was still under discussion.
“The upgrading works to beautify this area did not mean that we will chase out the vendors,” he said when met by reporters during the DBKU plogging activity at Kuching Waterfront yesterday.
Plogging is a combination of jogging with picking up litter. It began in Sweden in 2016 and spread to other countries in 2018 following increased concern about plastic pollution.
Junaidi said while the beautification project was necessary, he stressed that everyone needed to cultivate a cleanliness and hygiene mindset.
“We have to really sit down, plan properly. Give us a little bit of time to come up with a master plan,” he added.
As for plogging, Junaidi said: “Basically, we want to embed the culture of taking care of the environment because cleanliness is not the responsibility of one man but everybody’s.”
He also emphasised that controlling illegal hawkers at Kuching Waterfront was vital to ensure hygiene.
