KUCHING: Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has collaborated with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) to create a framework to implement activities that will ensure the sustainability of the city.

DBKU Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said a three-year strategic plan will be implemented to address carbon emission, which involves reducing carbon output in the environment.

“This will be implemented soon, and we will also be organising several events based on activities and agreements with Unimas to address this issue,” he said.

He said this during the closing of the Health and Environmental Sustainability Carnival which was officiated by Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi at Ecomall, Petra Jaya on Sunday (Nov 24).

He said the carnival served as an important platform to raise public awareness about the importance of maintaining physical health and environmental sustainability.

“This year’s theme ‘Our Health and Environment, A Shared Responsibility’ is relevant to our goal of creating a healthy, resilient, and environmentally responsible community.

“The carnival combines programmes from the Environmental Health division, namely the “Jom Sihat” Programme, Environmental Health Day Celebration, and Advocacy for Environmental and Energy Management Systems.

“We must bring awareness to the community under Kuching North City Hall to recognise that climate change is real. Therefore, it is our shared responsibility to address these environmental issues,” he said.

He also called on city residents, especially DBKU-licensed food operators, to collaborate in ensuring the cleanliness of their food premises.

“This call extends not only to food operators but also to all city residents, encouraging them to participate actively in maintaining cleanliness at home and beyond because with collective efforts, we can create a more conducive environment for living in a sustainable and prosperous city,” he said.

The event saw the presentation of cash prizes, certificates of participation, and awards by Dr Abdul Rahman for several competitions, including the Toilet Awards 2024, Family Collage Art Contest, Environmental Health Poster Contest, and the much-anticipated Recycle Fashion Show.
