KUCHING: The reopening of the country’s borders will bring about positive economic impacts but this needs to be implemented in a proper manner, says Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

The Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) pointed out that priorities must be given to the health and safety aspects.

“The opening of our borders will spur our economy, but we must be careful. We do not want another lockdown or movement control order (MCO).

“As such, the standard operating procedures (SOP) must be strictly adhered to.”

He was speaking to the media after launching the Integrity and Innovation Day, and Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) 2022 Assembly here on Wednesday (Feb 9).

Recalling the MCO days, Awang Tengah admitted that the timber industry faced many challenges, including logistics.

He said the reopening of borders would certainly facilitate in reviving various business sectors, including the timber and tourism industries.

“Despite the prospects of positive impacts on the economy, we must prioritise the people’s health and safety as a whole.”
