KUCHING: Due to stealing several items and snacks from a supermarket, a hearing-impaired woman has been sentenced to one day in jail and fined RM1,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today.
The accused, Nurlinna Tang Abdullah, 36, who works as a hairdresser, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which was read before Magistrate Zaiton Anuar.
According to the charge, she was accused of stealing two packets of biscuits, one tray of chicken eggs, two packs of sanitary pads, three bottles of dishwashing soap, two bottles of carbonated water, a box of chrysanthemum tea beverage, a bottle of Ribena juice, one pack of chocolate, two bottles of candies, and a multipurpose bag from a leading shopping centre supermarket on Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, at approximately 6.35 pm on June 19.
Upon conviction, she could be sentenced up to ten years in prison and fined, and for subsequent offences, caning may be imposed.
Based on the facts of the case, during the incident, the complainant, who was a supermarket sales assistant, noticed a woman acting in a suspicious manner and informed the security guard.
Upon inspection, it was revealed that the accused had taken the items without making any payment, resulting in an estimated loss of RM435.15.
The prosecution was conducted by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was not represented by a counsel.
