KUCHING: In a significant step towards environmental conservation and cross-cultural exchange, 12 students from Deakin University, Australia, have successfully completed a tree-planting programme on Wednesday (Jan 31).
The programme saw the planting of various native tree species, contributing to the preservation of the region’s natural beauty and biodiversity.
This initiative, held at the renowned Sarawak 4×4 Training Academy (Sar4Trac), where alongside local volunteers and members from Sarawak Eco Warriors planted a range of indigenous tree species, including crystal fruit, mango, rambutan, soursop, and others.
The leader of the Deakin University study group, Dr Katherine Barrand, expressed her enthusiasm about the project, describing the tree planting event as incredibly meaningful for her students.
“It provided them with a hands-on opportunity to make a tangible difference in the environment.
“It was an educational experience that raised awareness about ecological issues and the importance of conservation,” she said in a statement that was issued by Sarawak Eco Warriors on Thursday (Feb 1).
Barrand shared that the students left with a heightened sense of responsibility towards nature and a deeper understanding of their potential impact.
Looking ahead, according to her, the students are enthusiastic about continuing their efforts in nature conservation.
“The university plans to organise more tree planting events and expand our activities to include other conservation-related projects.
“We believe these initiatives not only benefit the environment but also enrich our students’ educational journey.”
Kelvin Yong, instructor at Sar4Trac, explained that off-road enthusiasts enjoy a lot of time in nature and environment preservation is one of the ways off-road enthusiasts reciprocate to allow them to continue enjoying their outdoor adventures.
“We are grateful and honoured to have students of Deakin University, Australia contribute their time and effort in a tree planting exercise.
“We welcome and look forward to these preservation activities where the students have the opportunity to learn about our local greenery and experience the local method of planting them,” he said.
Sar4Trac (Sarawak 4X4 Training Academy) is the first permanent off-road driving and safety training provider in Sarawak and their academy is equipped with a permanent lecture facility and obstacle course and real-world off-road trails just minutes away.
Meanwhile, Mark Liao from Sarawak Eco Warriors said that the team from Sarawak Eco Warriors are thrilled to witness the growing enthusiasm among various groups coming together for the noble cause of nature conservation.
“Our team at Sarawak Eco Warriors is eagerly looking forward to supporting more tree planting initiatives and nature conservation programmes in the future.”
Sarawak Eco Warriors is a locally based environmental organisation that aims to support the conservation of nature, with the emphasis on three priority areas; Biodiversity, Waste management, and Youth.
