Deals inked between Sarawak Design Centre and varsities, associations

KUCHING: Four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were inked between Sarawak Design Centre (SARADEC) and two universities as well as two associations.

SARADEC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC), is aimed at producing furniture design talents and promoting Sarawak designs globally.

The MoU signings were witnessed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and SARADEC chairman Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais during the opening of the inaugural Sarawak Design Week 2023 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

The first was signed between SARADEC and Korea Furniture Association (KOFA) to develop talents and creative designs for the growth of the furniture and design industry in Korea and Sarawak.

SARADEC also inked a deal with University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) to facilitate skills training, build career paths, co-organise ReTex and others.

The third MoU was between SARADEC and Miri Community College, in which it will help to facilitate skills training of SARADEC SayD’signers, build a career path for them, organise the Incubator and SayD’signers Link and Match (SLIM) programme together in the future.

The final MoU signing was between SARADEC and Sarawak Timber Association (STA).

It will allow both parties to work closely together and collaborate with other relevant agencies towards achieving the target of RM6bil in value-added products of the total export earnings from timber and timber products by 2030.

Also present were STIDC general manager Datuk Hashim Bojet and SARADEC chief executive officer Dayang Nena Abang Bruce.
