KUCHING: The upcoming Sape Camp 2024 programme promises an enriching week of musical
workshops, capped with a graduation ceremony and an Evening Unity Concert showcasing performances by the camp’s graduates.

Following its successful debut in May 2023, Sape Camp 2024, organised by Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS), is set to return for its second edition starting from Dec 2 to 7.

“The motto for this year’s camp, ‘Fostering Talents – Driving Unity’, reflects YPS’ mission of bringing together youths from diverse backgrounds all over Malaysia to develop their skills in playing the Sape, an indigenous Sarawakian instrument.

“YPS believes that by nurturing musical talents, it fosters mutual respect and unity, equipping participants with both skills and a shared sense of purpose that strengthens cultural bonds,” it said on Tuesday (Nov 5).

Applications for the event are currently open until Nov 13, specifically for Malaysian youths aged 15 to 29 who have a musical background, experience with stringed instruments, and a passion for Sape music.

“The selected participants will attend the week-long camp in Kuching, with all expenses covered by YPS.”

According to a spokesperson from YPS, Sape Camp is about more than just learning an instrument as participants will explore the Sape’s deep cultural significance.

“The programme includes professional-led workshops on Sape composition, creative exploration of Sape melodies, and sessions on crafting and designing the instrument itself.

“Through this immersive experience, participants will gain a deeper understanding of Sarawak’s musical heritage.”

Meanwhile, the programme will culminate in the Evening Unity Concert at Plaza Merdeka Shopping Centre on Dec 7.

“Reflecting on last year’s concert, which marked the culmination of the first Sape Camp, attendees were captivated by the vibrant sounds and unity showcased by the participants.

“The concert demonstrated the transformative power of music, with youths from diverse backgrounds performing as one, symbolising the unity that YPS strives to foster.

“This year’s concert will once again feature performances by the new YPS Sape Ambassadors, celebrating their journey and commitment to promoting harmony through music,” it said.

Besides, graduates of the camp will be welcomed as YPS Sape Ambassadors with expectation that they will continue developing their skills, actively participating in YPS events and initiatives across Sarawak and Malaysia.

“YPS will cover expenses and provide allowances to support ambassadors in spreading the traditional sounds of the Sape, furthering its mission to drive unity through cultural appreciation,” it said.
