KUCHING: The decision to close some schools in Sarawak due to the high number of Covid-19 cases will be known on the 18th or 19th of April.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the committee’s proposal had been presented to the state education director.

“We wait for their decision. We should be able to get it by tomorrow or latest by Monday.

“We have submitted to them the number of schools where students have tested positive,” he said at SDMC’s Covid-19 update press conference today.

Uggah said not all schools would be directed to close as cases appeared to be concentrated in a few locations only.

“We still have yellow and green zones, and in the green zones the schools can continue,” he said.

On the current status of districts in Sarawak, he said Selangau District had changed status from orange to red after recording 128 local cases in the last 14 days. With this the number of red districts increased to 16.

“The districts of Betong and Asajaya have changed from yellow to orange after recording 22 and 21 local cases respectively in the last 14 days,” said Uggah.

Bau District has gone from orange to yellow after recording 12 local cases in the last fortnight.

“There are only four districts that remain green,” he said.
