KUCHING: The Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research is trying to figure out the cause of decline in students’ interests in Mathematics and Science.

This was revealed by its minister, Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong during a press conference at Riverside Majestic Hotel here, yesterday.

“Probably one of the factors is that the subjects are not taught in the proper way in the primary school level.

“Some teachers are not even qualified to teach Science or Mathematics but are forced to do so because of the lack of teachers,” he said, adding that the coming years can see an increase in demand for engineering and science-based jobs.

Manyin also explained that in some schools with a small number of students, there aren’t enough students to stimulate a competitive and conducive learning environment.

“Based on studies conducted in Western countries, if students are not taught mathematics and science the proper way, the damage will be irreversible.

“This is why we have to target small schools at a primary level,” he said, adding that parents and teachers must put emphasis on Mathematics and Science if they want their children to have a better future.
