KUCHING: It was an impressive sight when some 300 cycling enthusiasts converged on the heart of the city for the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL2020) Night Ride in Padang Merdeka here on Thursday.
The ride held during the FAMA My Best Buy programme was a prelude to the LTdL2020 proper, which began yesterday.
The cyclists, who were on their beautifully decorated bicycles—some with LED lights—paddled along a 10km route for almost 30 minutes.
Among the riders was 68-year-old retiree Mohamat Ali with his bicycle that had a unique set of wheels, and adorned with dazzling lighting.
“It took me about one week to finish the decoration.
“I have been cycling since 2007 after retiring. It’s a good way for me to stay healthy,” said the grandfather of six grandchildren from Kampung Lintang.
Another bicycle with neon lighting strips around the wheels was owned by Surenawati Zainun, a mother of three teenage girls.
The 44-year-old said she enjoyed decorating bicycles and had joined many cycling events, including competing in the best looking bicycle contests.
“All my daughters are involved in cycling. I hope my bicycle can beat my daughters’ and win the best looking contest,” she quipped.
Flagged off by Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) chairman Ishak Ismail, the 10km night ride saw the participants going from Padang Merdeka and on to Kuching Waterfront, from Jalan Abel to the roundabout near Binama building, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol, Jalan Patingan, Jalan Rubber, Jalan Satok, crossing Satok Bridge, Jalan Kulas, RTM building before returning to Padang Merdeka.
The event was organised by Fama in collaboration with Kuching Division Cycling Association and Matang Jaya Cycling Club.
Among those present were Sarawak Cycling Association president Datuk Benjamin Hasbie and Sarawak Fama director Datuk Dr Mat Sani Hassan.
