KUCHING: The decorated boats parade in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of Sarawak Independence at the Kuching Waterfront here is expected to be witnessed by thousands of spectators tomorrow evening (July 29).
Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said this was based on the encouraging response by the public who witnessed the full rehearsal of the event yesterday evening.
He pointed out that the last time the decorated boats parade was held in the city was back in 2013 which was in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Sarawak Independence.
“I am confident that for the actual event, many spectators will flood the Kuching Waterfront to watch the decorated boats and be a part of the lively celebration,” he said when met by reporters on Thursday evening after the full rehearsal.
Henry said this year’s event will be very meaningful for the people of Sarawak, especially the young ones who will be witnessing it for the very first time.
“I would like to encourage everyone to come and watch the decorated boat parade,” he said.
A total of 20 decorated ships representing various ministries, agencies, and private companies will participate in the parade where between 5,000 and 10,000 spectators are expected.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to attend the event.
Last Monday, Henry told a press conference that jet skis and mining boats will also participate in the parade on the water.
The decorative ship will start its journey from Pengkalan Abok accompanied by background music.
Sarawak-born artistes, Hafiz Suip and Dayang Nurfaizah, are scheduled to perform in the evening.
