KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak is aiming to complete its proposed new international airport in Kuching by 2028, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“This timeline follows the conclusion of ongoing feasibility studies,” he said.

Abang Johari also announced plans for a deep sea port in Kuching, integrated with a gas terminal hub.

“Similar to the airport, this project is slated for completion in 2028 after feasibility studies are finalised,” he said during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sarawak government and the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT) today (July 19).

Abang Johari, who also holds the portfolios of Finance and New Economy, said that Sarawak’s Post-COVID Development Strategies (PCDS) 2030 envisions a data-driven and innovative society by 2030, where all Sarawakians enjoy economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and a sustainable environment.
“We are pursuing a variety of initiatives under PCDS 2030.

“These include promoting a Green Economy with renewable energy sources like hydropower, floating solar, hydrogen, and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS).

“Significant investments are being made in infrastructure development, encompassing roads, bridges, water and electricity supply, telecommunication and internet connectivity, autonomous rapid transit (ART), and other strategic projects,” he said.

The Premier highlighted Sarawak’s achievement of high-income status by the World Bank in 2023, coupled with record-breaking revenue collection.

“However, this is not a reason for complacency.

“There’s much to accomplish, and the road ahead presents challenges,” he said.

Abang Johari stressed the need for continued innovation, collective commitment to progress, and strategies to double Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030.

“With only six years remaining, we must move beyond business as usual,” he urged.

“We require resilience, agility, and the capacity to discover new avenues and opportunities for growth within this challenging economic landscape.”

The MoU signing with LTAT signifies the state’s commitment to collaboration. Abang Johari described the initiative as a platform to explore potential cooperation, information sharing, and mutual support between both parties.
