KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will propose to the Federal Government that Deepavali be declared a public holiday in the state.
He said the Sarawak government is aware of this issue that has often been raised by the Indian community in the state.
“Many expressed their concerns and requests, including the wish for Deepavali to be declared a public holiday in Sarawak.
“I believe the state government is already aware of this, and I will bring it up (to the federal government) again,” he said at a Deepavali dinner held at Indian Association Kuching (IAK) Hall here on Saturday.
Previously, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had said that Sarawak would consider the local Indian community’s request to declare Deepavali as a public holiday.
