KUCHING: Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has given his vote of approval to the Majlis Ramah Tamah Deepavali for bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate the traditions and values of Sarawak’s Indian community.

He said the event showcased Sarawak’s greatest strength, unity in diversity, allowing appreciation for the unique contributions each community brings to the fabric of the state.

“It is a privilege to be here with all of you to celebrate Deepavali, the Festival of Lights which symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, embodying values cherished by all Sarawakians.”

Wee who is Kuching Soith City Council (MBKS) mayor said Sarawak stands as a beacon of multicultural unity, where diversity is celebrated and embraced.

“At MBKS, we consider ourselves, every one of you, as one family,” he said this at the Majlis Ramah Tamah Deepavali MBKS 2024 here Wednesday (Nov 6).

“As far as I’m concerned as a mayor, we make sure we in MBKS, we do not leave any race or celebration behind, we will not leave anyone behind. We will celebrate everyone’s festival,” he said.

Wee added that the state government, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and other leaders, has a strong dedication to emphasising this vision of social inclusion.

“Together, we work to ensure that every community has a voice and is empowered to contribute to our shared future.

“Through supportive policies and initiatives, the government strives to uplift the well-being of every Sarawakian, making our state a true model of peaceful coexistence and unity in diversity,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of continuing to recognise and appreciate the dedication of everyone contributing to the growth and well-being of Kuching South, especially those within the council.

“Together, let us build a Sarawak that remains a place of opportunity, respect, and togetherness for generations to come,” he said.

Meanwhile, the event also saw Wee presenting red packets (ang pau) to Indian MBKS staff celebrating the occasion.
