Deity Seng Ong Kong’s b’day celebrated in grandeur

KUCHING: The Seng Ong Kong deity birthday celebration, which is celebrated by the Chinese community, is now back in what  is seen as the biggest celebration ever.

Over 160 troops participated in the celebration consisting of various lion and dragon dance groups and people from all walks of life participated and witnessed the celebration.

The seven-and-a-half-hour celebration began at 4.30 pm ended at 12 midnight. Each troop walked around Kuching city before returning to Hong Song Si Temple, featuring the 181 foot long ‘Fire Drago.

One of the most important features of the procession was the march of the deity, which began after 7 pm where devotees carried ‘Muzu’, a deity from Ching San Yen Temple (also known as Muara Tebas Temple), Seng Ong Kong, a deity from a Taoist temple in Sabah and Hong Song Si’s own deity, ‘Seng Ong Kong’.

Colourful dragons playing traditional and party songs, alongside dolls and various entertainers were also present throughout the celebration.

Federation of Chinese Associations of Sarawak president Datuk Richard Wee said the celebration is a potential tourist attraction.

“This celebration, celebrated annually, has the potential to become part of the tourism programme in Sarawak.

“As a matter of fact, many flocked to join in the celebration, following a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he expressed.

Richard was speaking at the celebration at Hong Song Si Temple here on yesterday (Mar 13).

In the meantime, tourists found the celebration unique which represented the rich cultural heritage of Sarawak.

Dutch tourist Nick Urbaan was happy to watch the procession and found it truly beautiful.

“I saw children playing traditional musical instruments, which was wonderful.

“I hope to witness more of such celebrations in the future,” he said.

Among those present during the procession were Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
