KUCHING: Contractors have again been reminded to pull up their socks and complete projects within the stipulated time frame.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who has been vocal on this issue said it was important they meet the expectations of the people.

It is equally important to work in tandem with the government’s aim to make Sarawak a developed state by 2030.

In driving home this message to contractors, Uggah, who is Infrastructure and Port Development Minister, pointed to the 34 projects across the state which have been categorised as critically delayed.

This is due to various issues encountered during project implementation, he said.

According to him the 34 projects are among 215 projects worth RM28 billion under the Public Works Department (PWD).

“The PWD is responsible for monitoring ongoing projects and making sure they are completed.

“This is because the people have high hopes when there are projects to be implemented in their area.

“If the projects are not completed on time, this will only bring frustration to the people,” Uggah said after closing the New Initiatives to Enhance Sarawak’s Construction Industry seminar here yesterday (Feb 8).

He said the seminar brought together contractors, implementing agencies and government agencies to discuss directions to improve the construction industry in Sarawak.

“It is a new beginning for the industry because as we know the Federal government has entrusted us to implement projects below RM50 million, so it is important and crucial for us to complete projects on time and of good quality.”

To improve project delivery, PWD has introduced the “One Month Deliverable” Pledge or Undertaking, he reiterated.

“Upon site possession, the contractor must comply with all mandatory and quality requirements with timely commencement of the construction works as stipulated in the One Month Deliverable Pledge.

“Failure to comply with the pledge will result in the determination of the contractor’s employment under the contract,” he said.
