KUCHING: A democracy awareness workshop for youths by Persatuan Pemangkin Daya Masyarakat (PPDM) will be held on Feb 27 in Betong.

The objective is to share with young Sarawakians the country’s system of governance and their responsibilities when it comes to voting.

“We urged youths in the Betong area to join the workshop. It is important for today’s youths to know their rights in influencing the decision-making process,” PPDM said in a statement.

Participants aged between 15 and 30 years old are also encouraged to attend.

“We would like to challenge the idea of some leaders saying that those who are under 18 are not suitable to vote as they are not sensitive to the current administration, politics and issues compared to the 21-year-olds.

“Thus, the workshop will be providing basic knowledge to those who are ready to vote.”

A ballot counter would also be opened at the workshop to help youths register as voters, and all they need to bring is their identity card.

“We hope that youths in Betong will take this opportunity to learn and understand the country’s administrative system and their responsibilities.
