KUCHING: The Sarawak Forestry Department (SFD) hosted the “Introduction of Forest Carbon Activities” seminar with the aim of providing insights to relevant sectors about forest carbon activities in the state.

Director Datuk Hamden Mohammed explained that the seminar was designed to proactively prepare agencies for upcoming developments in this field.

“As pioneers among Malaysian states in this realm, we have become an exemplar for others. They seek to learn from us about how we manage laws, programmes, and agreements related to carbon initiatives.

“This seminar was organised to enhance understanding among Sarawak’s population about concepts such as carbon initiatives and carbon credits,” he said during a press conference following the seminar’s launch here on Tuesday (Aug 8).

Hamden pointed out that the abundance of carbon resources in Sarawak can be capitalised on through carbon trading, potentially becoming a source of revenue for the state.

“Regarding carbon trading, our goal is to establish internationally acceptable standards, particularly within our existing laws. This preparation will help us avoid obstacles when the trading process is initiated.”

He also highlighted that the Sarawak government is now placing greater emphasis on green policies as part of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, with a specific focus on environmental sustainability.

“We are committed to maintaining a balance between the development of Sarawak and the preservation of its environment.

“This seminar and our efforts seek to ensure that the public and all agencies in Sarawak understand the concept of carbon trading and the importance of safeguarding our precious forests.”
