LUBOK ANTU: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) is exploring the feasibility of deploying floating solar technology at its other reservoirs, including Bakun and Murum.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this will be achieved through strategic planning and investment in renewable energy projects.
“We have already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MASDAR of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which will be the sole developer in the Bakun and Murum areas.
“Through our engagements, many investors are keen to invest in power generation, and there are liquidity funds available to finance hydro and solar projects,” he said.
He said this during a press conference following his working visit to the Batang Ai Floating Solar Farm project site here today (June 20).
MASDAR, with its presence in more than 40 countries, is one of the world’s largest renewable energy companies and a leader in green hydrogen, positioning the UAE at the forefront of the energy transition.
Abang Johari also highlighted that green energy would enable the production of hydrogen through the P to G to P (power to gas to power) concept.
“This serves as a feedstock to generate power. If we have renewable energy, we can produce hydrogen, specifically green hydrogen.
“From hydrogen, we can produce green methanol and green ammonia, which have vast markets.
“Recently, I read that Elon Musk has switched his cars from electric to hydrogen, indicating a growing trend towards hydrogen for mobility. Thus, Sarawak is at the forefront of hydrogen production,” he added.
Meanwhile, he shared that Chinese Premier Li Qiang is aware of the investments and entrepreneurs from China in Sarawak, contributing to holistic economic development.
“Yesterday, I had a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Premier Li. We discussed Sarawak’s green energy initiatives, and the Prime Minister also shared this information with the Chinese Premier,” he added.
