KUCHING: The authorities are told to throw the book at foreigners flouting the movement control order (MCO).
Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) president Datuk John Lau suggested that foreigners found guilty of the charges should be deported out of the country.
Lau added that the absence of sufficient travel documents on foreign offenders calls for enforcement of maximum punishment.
“SCPA urges the authority to enforce maximum punishment, if found guilty, on the offender.
“The offender needs to be deported back to his/her home country after servicing the sentence in Malaysia,” he said in reference to a recent case in the nation’s administrative capital where a foreign national struck a police officer while the latter was manning a roadblock.
Lau said the incident was uncalled for particularly while the nation is battling against the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.
“(SCPA) is saddened and perturbed that the foreign worker involved chose to attack a police officer who was working round the clock to make sure that everyone abides by the law,” said Lau.
He put forward the idea that a person who resorts to violence and abnormal reactions shows that he/she may have some hidden agenda.
“In this case, the suspect did not have a valid travel document and he thought he can run away from our competent Malaysian police.
“A normal person with a sound mind will always abide by the law of the country,” he said.
Lau also calls upon foreigners residing in the country to abide by the Malaysian law in hopes that no similar incident will occur, particularly in the state.
Meanwhile, Lau also advised members of the public to always uphold the law of the country and be a law-abiding citizen throughout the MCO period.
